How a Solar Water Heater Works
In northern climates such as we experience in Wisconsin, solar water heaters are usually designed using a closed-loop antifreeze system. In such a solar water heating system, the solar thermal panels do not heat your domestic water supply directly. Instead, they heat a solution of food-grade glycol. Pipes carrying the heated glycol solution pass through a heat exchanger located in or on a solar storage tank. Your existing water heater remains an integral part of your system and kicks in during prolonged cloudy periods when available sunlight is insufficient to meet your water heating needs.
